Father Christmas began in England, where he wasn’t a children’s figure at all, but rather the spirit of winter. He was imagined as a tall, merry old man. He wore long green, fur-trimmed robes, crowned with holly or ivy, carrying a staff, lantern, and even a bowl of spiced ale. But rather than delivering gifts, he embodied warmth, feasting, and the comfort of gathering together when the days were cold and short.
As English traditions blended with other European winter folklore—especially the Dutch Sinterklaas who wore red—Father Christmas gradually took on the role of a gift-giver. Today he’s celebrated much like Santa Claus, visiting homes on Christmas Eve. The magic still lingers and he is now the symbol of warmth, gathering, and winter magic.
