The History of the Dala Horse
During the war of 1716 there were many soldiers that took refuge in homes throughout Sweden. In the forested region of Dalarna, there was a soldier who carved a wooden horse and painted it red. The soldier gifted the red toy horse to the family he stayed with as a thank you. In return, the woman of the house gave him a bowl of soup.
Soon, soldiers from all over Sweden started carving toy horses and painting them red. The horses became a means of currency for the soldiers and could be traded for food and hospitality. It is said that the Dala Horse is the reason the soldiers were able to survive the terrible winter that year.
