Dutch Klompen
Sinterklaas, or Saint Nicholas, is a beloved figure in Dutch culture. He arrives from Spain each year accompanied by his little helpers and his horse, Amerigo. On the eve of December 5th, children place their wooden clogs, or klompen, by the fireplace, at the door, or on a windowsill. They fill their shoes with carrots, hay, or sugar cubes as a treat for Sinterklaas's horse. In exchange for the treats left for the horse, Sinterclaas fills the children's klompen with small gifts, candies, and sometimes coins.
Klompen serve as a conduit for magic and joy, embodying the spirit of giving and the excitement of the holiday season.
