Santa Lucia Day

In 303 AD the emperor of Rome banned Christianity from Italy. All Christians were arrested, made slaves, or put to death. Those who were not captured hid under the dark catacombs of Syracuse.

During this time there was a young girl named Lucia—which means light. Lucia consecrated herself to God and chose a life of service to the poor. As a part of her service Lucia would secretly feed the Christians in hiding by bringing them food, water, and sweet buns. In order to free up her hands, Lucia wore a crown of candles to light her way in the dark catacombs.

Eventually Lucia was caught and put to death on December 13th which is now St. Lucia Day. The holiday falls upon the darkest time of the year and is a symbol of the return of light.
